Inland Revenue steps up action on overdue GST and employer obligations

Continued focus on collecting overdue debt and returns, particularly GST and employer (EMP) debt.

Targeted campaign

The targeted campaign is aimed at taxpayers with debt, who have already been through the full billing cycle but have not yet responded. As part of this initiative, Inland Revenue be reaching out to them again.

IRD's approach

There will be 3 steps to IRD's approach:

  1. They will begin by contacting the taxpayer directly to resolve the debt and any overdue returns, either through full payment or by setting up an instalment arrangement
  2. If there is no response, IRD will leave a message and ask the taxpayer to return the call
  3. If the taxpayer does not respond, IRD will make one final attempt to contact them.

If these attempts do not lead to a positive outcome, IRD may take any of the following actions:

  • A visit to speak with the taxpayer about their debt
  • A bank deduction
  • Other enforcement actions which may include bankruptcy or liquidation consideration.

If you have outstanding GST or employer debts — or overdue returns — act now. Early engagement can help resolve issues, set up manageable payment arrangements and reduce the risk of enforcement action. Speak with Alliott NZ in Newmarket Auckland to get your obligations back on track before NZ Inland Revenue escalates its response.

You can also manage your payments and returns in myIR.  More information is available on the NZ IRD website »
