WHAT CAN I DO TO PROTECT THE DOWNSIDE?

Will the world economy continue to recover?

For investors this question is not just academic, but critical to their decision-making process.  If the answer is “No” then currently, bonds look relatively more attractive than equities (shares).  If the answer is “Yes, and robustly”, equities should be able to sustain their recent strong gains.

The fact is, the world economy is still somewhat fragile and vulnerable and who knows how, if another financial crisis befalls us, different sorts of investments will be affected.

The important thing for many people is to have a strategy that takes both improving and deteriorating conditions into account.  And, for most people, protecting wealth against the downside is more important than positioning for a possible upside.

An often overlooked investment sector is commodities: oil, minerals like gold and copper, soybeans, wheat, milk powder etc.

The contribution that commodities can make to your investment strategy is that they are quite different to shares, property and bonds.  Thus, by spreading some wealth into commodities you improve your chances of avoiding having too many of your eggs in the wrong basket.

If you feel that some diversification away from just the traditional sectors would be beneficial, we can suggest some excellent options.
